Thomas, who lived in the Parkway Gardens neighborhood, suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:46 p.m.A man was found shot to death at 8:32 a.m. in the Little Village neighborhood on the Southwest Side. Officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 2400 block of South Sacramento and found 19-year-old Victor Davila in an alley with a gunshot wound to the chest, police and the medical examiner’s office said. Davila, who lived in the Little Village neighborhood less than a mile from where he was shot, was pronounced dead at the scene less than an hour later.The day’s latest shooting happened about 9:45 p.m. in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side. A 25-year-old man was on the sidewalk in the 5500 block of West North Avenue when a male walked up and shot him in the back three times with a handgun, police said. Kim / Chicago Tribune)Elyssa CherneyContact ReporterChicago TribuneIn the opening hours of a historically violent Labor Day weekend, 13 people were shot, two fatally, in attacks from Friday afternoon to Saturday morning, according to Chicago police.Most of the shootings — including the first homicide — happened over about three hours from about 11:20 p.m. Friday to 2:40 a.m. Saturday.In the earlier fatal attack, a 26-year-old man was hit in a quadruple shooting about 1:20 a.m. Saturday in the Gresham neighborhood on the South Side.The 26-year-old was in a group sitting on a porch in the 8300 block of South Hermitage Avenue when three men got out of a white sedan parked behind the house, ran through a gangway, jumped over a fence and started shooting, police said. The gunmen ran from the scene.The gunshot victims were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said. The 26-year-old was shot in the chest and stomach and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Not being 'on the ground' in Illinios it is difficult for me to fully undertand the mindset of everyone involved there. Is there the possibility however that the police and the public authorities have just given up on a big section of Chicago society? Feeling unable to do anything positive to stop they cycle of violence, they have settled on letting the perps kill or maim each other and accept the innocent bistander victims as collateral damage? Then worry about the last man standing?Just a thought.

Two people were killed and 12 others wounded in shootings from Sunday afternoon to early Monday.Most recently, two people were shot in Grand Crossing about 10:30 a.m., police said.A man, 24, and a second man, 30, both were shot in the buttocks while standing in the 1500 block of East 68th Street. Both of the men were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and each of their conditions was stabilized there, officials said.The men were shot by a man in a black or gray shirt who came up to them, started shooting, then took off heading north on South Blackstone Drive on foot. No arrests had been made.About 9 a.m. a man of unknown age was walking in the 7000 block of South Merrill Avenue in the South Shore neighborhood when a man wearing a red hoodie ran up to him and started firing at the man. He was hit multiple times, police said, and was rushed to Northwestern Memorial Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized.The shooter took off running in an unknown direction. I lived and worked in NYC from 1971 through 2004. In the 1970's there were close to three times as many homicides in NYC (close to or over 2000 per year) as there were recently in Chicago. In the 1970's I worked the swing shift (5:00PM to 12:30PM) in Greenwich Village in Manhattan and commuted by subway to Brooklyn where I lived. People essentially were on their guard at all times on the streets after midnight, ready for an attack. A co-worker who commuted home to the black section of Brooklyn said people carried open knives when they got off the train to avoid being mugged. People getting off the train would walk past each other on the train platform with their knives at port arms and nod to each other as they passed. I remember reading Bruce Lee's book where he said if you kept a 10' circle of safety around you, you would be OK. Whenever I saw someone dodgy I crossed the street or walked in the street with traffic until they were clear of me. I came close a few times but never got mugged, but others did. I was young and it was just a part of life. Now I'm retired in the suburbs where the only people I'm leery of are the cops. I live in southern NJ, but the cops may as well be from Alabama.
