CROYDON, N.H. (AP) — Joe Biden pondered a most serious, and awkward, question at a campaign stop Friday: What if Barack Obama had been assassinated during his presidential campaign in 2008?
Toward the end of an event in Hanover, Biden evoked two of his political heroes, Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy. Both were assassinated in 1968, Kennedy while running for president.
Biden said: "Imagine what would have happened if, God forbid, Barack Obama had been assassinated after becoming the de facto nominee? What would have happened in America?"
The 76-year-old Biden served as Obama's vice president for two terms and was a U.S. senator representing Delaware for 36 years. He is seeking the Democratic nomination for president for a third time after two failed runs in 1988 and 2008 cycles.
Biden has long been prone to gaffes and misspeaking, another aspect of his candidacy that has come under scrutiny during his latest presidential run.
Biden's two appearances Friday included several other problematic comments as he riffed to the crowd. As he talked about teachers, he referenced his wife, Jill Biden, an educator, saying that if he didn't support teachers, "I would be sleeping alone."
At his final event of the day as he talked about taking away some tax breaks for richer Americans, Biden said, "I find most rich people are as patriotic as poor people."

Joe Biden is speaking from the perspective of those of us who lived through the assassinations of JFK, MLK and RFK. I was working my first full time job when JFK was assassinated, and voted for RFK in the California primary. Even though most Americans (60% of Americans are 44 years old or younger) may not relate to these events, they still are events that they ought to become acquainted with. "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."My personal opinion is that Obama played it very conservatively on the whole and failed to deliver on most of his campaign promises because he feared that he too would be assassinated. As a result he only accomplished two things of note for the majority of Americans, removing prior conditions as a reason to allow health insurance companies to deny coverage or payment, and removing the cap on health insurance company payouts. But to accomplish this he had to give the pharma companies a free pass and deliver tens of millions of often subsidized subscribers to those health insurance companies. In pretty much every other sphere, banking, prisons, the military, foreign relations, the environment, regulatory agencies, he towed the establishment line. Had he significantly broken with the establishment like JFK; MLK and RFK did, it's quite likely he would have been assassinated as well, the victim of another "lone nut". I also believe the attempted assassinations of Ford and Reagan were a message to let future presidents know who was really in charge. I don't think Biden's comments were irrational given my own beliefs about the presidency and the shadow government.Douglas MacArthur was a very savvy person. When Ike was elected president in 1952 (a position that MacArthur had coveted) he stated that Ike would make a fine president as he was the best clerk I ever had.
