STRENGTH OF SECTS INCREASES IN BRAZILIAN PARLIAMENT
The Universal Church Seeks to Weaken Catholic Church

SAO PAULO, NOV 3 (ZENIT).- According to sociologist Alexandre Fonseca, following the latest elections, the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God and other fundamentalist denominations have increased their representation in the Brazilian parliament.

The report points out that the Federal Congress has 35 Evangelical parliamentarians, 14 of whom belong to the controversial Universal Church of the Kingdom of God of Edir Macedo. The Neo-Pentecostal Church has 6 federal deputies and 26 deputies in 17 states and in the federal district of Brasilia.

The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God is, virtually, a financial empire. It has been described as Brazil's largest export industry. Born twenty years ago, as a result of a split in the Evangelical-Pentecostal movements which are all over the Americas (in Brazil alone there are some 100 sects of this origin), it has grown by violently attacking the Catholic Church and luring some two to three million faithful away from her. Contributions from the faithful amount to one thousand million dollars a year. The Universal Church owns the second most popular television channel (Red Record), 40 radio stations, a weekly with a circulation of one million, a financial institution in the Caiman Islands, a bank, an insurance company, editorial enterprises, record and video productions, a factory of church furniture and other businesses.

Heading this empire, with the appeal "if you do not give your money to God you give it to the devil" (the faithful must contribute 10% of their income, as established in the Old Testament), is a very curious personage: Edir Macedo, 53 years old, who calls himself "bishop." Until 1978 he worked for the State lottery. The sect was born in Rio de Janeiro, and for a long time Macedo was just one more television preacher. In the decade of the 90s, along with his followers, he combed the favelas of Rio, Sao Paulo and Salvador proclaiming his own "theology of prosperity." If we give our money to God, he will give us prosperity: that was and is the message.

In 1995 there was a terrible scene on television by a bishop of this Church -- Sergio Von Helde -- against an image of Our Lady Aparecida, one of the favorite devotions in Brazil. Thousands of people spilled out onto the streets, assaulted the "temples" with eggs, and the government made a harsh protest. From the Vatican, the Pope appealed to Catholics not "to respond to evil with evil."

Today Macedo lives like a king in New York with his wife and two children. He attracts some 200,000 people to a stadium where he conducts mass psychotherapy very effectively. One great lure of the Universal Church is its social services, its followers being among the most poor and disinherited. About 30% of its faithful have incomes well below the minimum salary level. The power of attraction lies in the fact that at any time of the day or night the poor can get "help, consolation and medical care. For the disinherited, in this country, even the doors of hospitals are closed."

What is even more worrying is that, like other sects, the objective is to gain political power. In 1994 this Church had 12 deputies. This was a determinant factor in the election of Cardoso, Brazil's president. The report states that one of the principal objectives of evangelical policy is a systematic endeavor to "reduce the Catholic influence" in the various areas of Brazilian society."

All the Evangelical deputies, who were on the electoral lists of 13 parties, belong to political groups which support the government of Fernando Henrique Cardoso and the party of the Liberal Front (PFL) which is in power at present.

Carlos Rodriguez, pastor of the Universal Church and leader of the Evangelical group in the new Federal Parliament, believes that the PFL's victory was not due to ideological commitment but, rather, to the objective of "reducing the Catholic presence " in that party. But, there is also an Evangelical presence in the Workers Party (PT) of Ignacio "Lula" de Silva. Gilmar Machado is leader of the Progressive Evangelical Movement and a PT deputy from the state of Minas Gerais. Machado promotes the presence of Evangelicals in the parties of the left.

According to the report, the majority of the new fundamentalist congressmen are "bishops" and "pastors," that is, they are recognized leaders of the organization. In the current federal legislature there are two pastors and four laymen, of the 40 evangelical deputies in the new state and federal legislatures, only 9 are laymen.

During the elections of October 4, 513 federal deputies were elected, 27 senators (one third of the Upper Chamber), the governors of the majority of the 27 states of Brazil, as well as 1,045 deputies of the legislative chambers of the 27 states. In the Constitutional Assembly of 1986 there were 33 Evangelical deputies, but because of the dispersion of votes the number decreased to 23 in 1991 and to 26 in 1995. The 35 representatives, therefore, constitute an historical record.

The Universal Church has spread to other countries: it is strong in Mozambique, South Africa and Portugal. In France it has two radio stations; in New York, five chapels, and in London it has purchased the Rainbow theater.

In English:
What it is the Great Tribulação? The Great Tribulação is the period of seven years that will soon give after to the ravishment of the Church of Mr. Jesus Christ. During this period of seven years, the peoples and nations will be citizens to the perverse domain of the Antichrist. (2 Tessalonicenses 2:9-10) Bishop Edir Macedo

9The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, 10and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.
