WASHINGTON - More than 90 members of Congress signed a letter to Mexican President Felipe Calderon on Wednesday urging action on the murders of young women in the border town of Ciudad Juarez.
The letter was initiated by Rep. Hilda Solis, D-Calif., and signed by 92 other members of the House, Democrats and Republicans.
"We are very pleased that the Mexican federal government has made good-faith efforts in recent years to combat violence against women in Ciudad Juarez and throughout Mexico. Nevertheless, the brutal assaults and murders continue," the lawmakers wrote to Calderon, who took office last December.
Hundreds of women have been murdered in Ciudad Juarez and the state of Chihuahua since 1993, and about 100 killings followed a pattern in which young women were sexually assaulted, killed and dumped in the desert.
The lawmakers applauded Calderon for signing a law prohibiting violence against women but urged him to fund it adequately and enact tougher penalties for such violence. They noted that the statute of limitation for murders in Mexico is 14 years and some murders are going unsolved longer than that.
"While there has been some progress in investigating the more recent crimes, the murders of women killed 14 years ago cannot be forgotten," the letter says.
Last year, both the House and Senate passed resolutions expressing sympathy with the families of the murdered women and encouraging increased U.S. involvement to solve the crimes.

Judge OKs extradition of suspect in Mexico border slayings
By MARK SCOLFORO
Associated Press Writer
HARRISBURG, Pa. -- A federal judge on Thursday ordered the extradition of a man who allegedly confessed to more than 10 murders in Mexico, but it was not known how soon he will be released from a federal prison in Pennsylvania.
U.S. Magistrate Judge J. Andrew Smyser said there was probable cause to extradite Jose Francisco Granados de la Paz to Mexico, but the suspect currently has about two years left to serve on a U.S. sentence for an immigration violation.
The U.S. Attorney's Office in Texas could petition a judge to have him returned sooner, said William Behe, a federal prosecutor in Harrisburg.
"When they return him, whether they reduce his sentence to get him back there more quickly, I don't know," Behe said. "That's what I would do, because time certainly affects the witness memory and preservation of evidence."
Granados de la Paz, 29, a Mexican citizen, allegedly admitted to Mexican and Texas authorities last year that he killed multiple women in Mexico.
"He confessed to having been involved in at least 10 female homicides near Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, from on or about 1993 to on or about 2006 as 'offerings to Satan,'" the extradition complaint said.
James Wade, a federal public defender representing Granados de la Paz, did not immediately return a telephone message seeking comment Thursday.
The extradition request focused on Granados de la Paz's alleged confession to stabbing Mayra Juliana Reyes Solis in the heart in June 2001. Her body, and the remains of four other women, were found five months later in a canal in Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso, Texas.
Last year, construction worker Edgar Alvarez Cruz was arrested in Denver on charges he killed Reyes Solis. Another man, Alejandro Delgado Valles, allegedly admitted helping kidnap some of the women but claimed not to have participated in killing them.
During the decade that ended in 2003, more than 100 women disappeared in Ciudad Juarez, their bodies often dumped in the desert nearby.

'For then shall be Great Tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.'
'For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; in so much that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect." ''
