The Death of Pat Tillman

Today, on August 20, director Amir Bar-Lev releases his documentary "The Tillman Story," which chronicles the U.S. government's deliberate attempts to cover up the true circumstances surrounding Pat Tillman's death in order to promote the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. For those unfamiliar with the case, Pat Tillman gave up a successful NFL career to join the Army Rangers in the wake of 9/11. On April 22, 2004, Tillman was gunned down by friendly fire as a result of gross negligence and possibly criminal action. Government officials, including General Stanley McChrystal, concocted a fake story of how Tillman died, saying his death occurred during an intense fire fight with enemy insurgents. Tillman was supposedly killed while charging up a hill taking the fight to the enemy, with his actions saving the lives of his fellow soldiers. None of it was true. Yet that's the story the government told the media and Tillman's family, including Tillman's brother Kevin who served in the same platoon. Tillman's uniform was burned and witness accounts were altered to hide the truth. It took five weeks for the government to finally admit Tillman died due to friendly fire, and even then the Army continued to lie about the circumstances of the incident. Pat Tillman was only 26 when he died, but he was a truly unique individual. I would invite everyone to please read more about the young man's life, his death, and the determined actions of his family to uncover the truth.
