Excerpts from Presidents of the United States : Author Simon Adams...

Lets start with JFK...

JOHN FITZGERALD KENNEDY WAS A HUGELY POPULAR LEADER, EVEN THOUGH HE WAS PRESIDENT FOR LESS THAN THREE YEARS..( ) He was the first US president to be born in the 20th century and one of the youngest ever elected. He was also handsome, with a glamourous wife, and young family. As the years have gone by, since his death, his reputation had declined. But in the early 60's, John F. Kennedy was the hope of the world. Kennedy was born into a large Catholic family.

His father Joseph Kennedy was once ambassador to Britain and was etermined that one of his children would becomepresident.John went to Harvard Universityand then joined the US Navy. A captain of a torpedo boat, he save his crew when it was sunk byJapanese in 1943. He was honered for his bravery. After the war, he entered politics as a Democrat. By 1956 he was well-known enough to try to become his party's vice-presidentaial candidate. Four years later he won his party's nomination for president. He beat the Republican, Richard (Nazi ) Nixon a nd became the 35th president of the USA.

As president, Kennedy governed a nation torn apart by civil rights. he set out a program that he called the New frontier, which would tackle poverty and inequality. He made lws to protect people's civil rights, set up medical care for the aged, and spent money on education. Many of these reforms were blocked by Congress, but Kennedy gained huge support for his work from African_Americans and the poor. In 1962 Russia placed nuclear missiles on the Caribbean island of Cuba, only a few miles off the US coasat. Kennedy ordered the Russians to remove them. For over a week, neither country would back down. Then the Russians gave in. The world had come very close to nuclear war.

In 1963 Kennedy signed a nuclear treaty with the Russians which banned the testing of nuclear weapons in the atmosphere. Tension between the two countries continued, however, as Kennedy sent support to South Vietnam to stop the country from being iinvada by Communist North Vietnam.

WHAT IF?

At the end of 1963, Kennedy was one of the most popular presidents in history. His assassination in Dallas was such a shock that the world took many years to discover the truth about Kennedy's presidency. In the years since his death, Kennedy's role in starting the war in Vietnam, his many affairs , and his links with gangsters have tarnished his image. Yet two of his brothers tried for the White House, and the love affair between America and the Kennedy family seems to continue.

LYNDON B. JOHNSON'S PRESIDENCY IS ONE OF THE GREAT AMERICAN TRAGEDIES OF US HISTORY. Johnson had not expected to become president.(:?:) He made many important changes to the way the country was run and he supported the poor and disadvantaged. But a war divided his country and lost him his job. Lyndon Johnson was a Texan who trained as a teacher and taught for two years before working for a Texas congressman. In 1935 President Roosevelt made Johnson head of the NEW DEAL National Youth Administration in Texas. By 1937 Johnson was in the House of Representatives. Eleven years later he was in the Senate.

Johnson was commmitted to the ideals of Roosevelt's New Deal and pushed through many new laws. He led the fight for the 1957 and 1960 Civil Rights Acts and supported social welfare and otehr programs thaat helped the less fortunate in society. Johnson was also good at fixing politcal and social problemems/ As a result he was the Democratic minority leader in the Senate in 1953, as the majority leader in the Senate in 1955, and his party's presidential candidate. He lost to John Kennedy, and became his vice-president when Kennedy won the election. One thousand days later, John Kennedy was assassinarted, and Lyndon Johnson became the president of a saddened nation. to be cont'd....

The Assassination

On November 22, 196, John F.Kennedy visited Dallas with his wife. Traveling in an open-top car, he was shot dead. Lee Harvey Oswald, a former marine, was arrested for the crime, but two days later he was shot in jail by Jack Ruby, a local nightclub owner. The new president, Lyndon Johnson set up the Warren Commission to find out if Owswald had acted alone or if there had been a conspiracy to kill President Kennedy. The Commission stated that Oswald alone had killed the president, but there are still many theories about who actually killed JFK.

Johnson grabbed the oportunity to push changes throught Congress. In 1964 Congress became overwhelmingly Democrat, which helped Johnson to get his new laws passed. He introduced Medicare-government -funded healthcare for the elderly, and the important Civil rights Act and Voting Rights Act. He gave money to education, and the arts, raised the minimum wage, and introduced laws to protect consumers and the environment. These reforms aimed to get rid of poverty in the richest country in the world. Many Americans came to prosper in Johnson's new society. In 1964 Johnson ran for president and won the elction with on of the biggest landslides in history.

Vietnam
Johnson believe that Communism was a threat to the world. he sent thousands of soldiers to South Vietnam to prevent a Communist take-ver. As the Vietnam war continued and the deaths mounted, people started to protest Johnson's "Great Society" was soon overshadowed by the horrors of Vietnam. In 1968 Johnson was so unpopular with the American people that he decided not to run for president a second time and retired.
Five years later Johnson was dead. He was exhausted and disappointed that his reputation as a great reformer was destroyed by a war he could not win.

RICHARD NIXON IS THE FIRST AND ONLY PRESIDENT WHO RESIGNED WHILE IN OFFICE. HE WAS DISTRUSTED AND DISLIKED before he became president and was disliked even more afterwards. He was in many ways, a successful president, but in the end, his dishonesty let him down. Nixxon was born in california and became a layer. After war service, he ran for the House of representatives. Nixon claimed that one of the Democrats in the House supported Communism and won his place because he promised to fight Communists. He then became a member of the Committee on Un-American Activities and became famous for his prosecution of the supposed Communist spy, Alger Hiss. In 1950 Nixon ran for the Senate. He criticised his opponent Helen Douglas, and won again. Eisenhower chose Nixon as his vice-presidential running mate..to be cont'd...

The election for the new President will take place in November 2008. The new President-elect will be sworn in as Pres in January 2009. That's when he officially takes office. There is no doubt that Bu$h would love to change the term limits (there is a two term limit in place now) and stay in office indefinitely. Why? Because he could keep the cash registers ringing for the war profiteers and also advance the agenda for the New World Order. Hopefully, if anything, his term will be cut SHORT! Short as in impeachment. Bu$h, is WITHOUT A DOUBT, the WORST "President" (never TRULY elected) in United States history. He becomes more delusional every day. He doesn't listen to his Generals. He has caused mass death and destruction. He lives in a bunker mentality. He spies on his own citizens. He shits on his country's Constitution. He's truly evil. Sort of like his grandfather's idol...Adolph Hitler.

NOTE
No president ever got in an equeL horroble situation like the almost fresh president Bush, only Rooseveld perhaps PEARL HARBOUR, but that was ann
