Bernie Sanders (I-VT) told CNN’s climate change town hall attendees Wednesday night that he is willing to talk about population control, suggesting that abortion is key to addressing the climate crisis.“Human population growth has more than doubled in the last 50 years,” an attendee told Sanders, adding that the planet cannot sustain such growth.“I realize this is a poisonous topic for politicians but it’s crucial to face. Empowering women and educating everyone on the need to curb population growth seems a reasonable campaign to enact,” the attendee continued.“Would you be courageous enough to discuss this issue and make it a key feature of a plan to address climate catastrophe?” she asked.“The answer is yes,” Sanders said, arguing that population control – in the form of abortion and birth control, specifically – is something he “very, very strongly” supports.“The answer has everything to do with the fact that women in the United States of America, by the way, have a right to control their own bodies and make reproductive decisions,” Sanders said.“And the Mexico City agreement, which denies American aid to those organizations around the world that are – that allow women to have abortions or even get involved in birth control is totally absurd,” he continued.“So I think especially in poor countries around the world, where women do not necessarily want to have large numbers of babies and where they can have the opportunity to birth control to control the number of kids they have is something I very, very strongly support,” he added.

Personally I think that abortion is a right people ought to have. I have three kids and 6 grandchildren, and would not have wanted my wife to have an abortion unless there was a good reason for it (eg. rape, unviable fetus, unviable health of mother). However I do know several people who elected to have an abortion for economic reasons and I don't judge them. I think it is their right to choose. I don't buy the abortion is murder argument, and it seems especially hypocritical from people who support wars fought for economic reasons, which actually are murder, pure and simple. And no one, except the Chinese Communist governemnt has ever mandated abortion, while the majority of countries around the world offer it as an option.I also believe there is nothing wrong with the American brand of socialism which does include SS, Medicare, Medicaid, public schools, welfare, previously nearly free public colleges (as a California resident I attended UC Berkeley and UCLA for $300 a semester in the 1960's, the same tuition only is $13,500 a semester today, or 45x higher), etc. Those who use socialism as a dirty word, as if it was equivalent to the Bolshevik revolution of 1917, and liberal as a dirty word, can claim Bernie is nuts, but I think most of the Democratic candidates make good points. The question really is, which one can actually turn those points into laws for the betterment of the country, rather than just creating sound bytes on TV, like Obama did, then fail to enact most of what was promised. And of course the larger question remains, does the POTUS have any real power at all, or is he or she just following orders?

I like to know what is "floating" around out there inThe Mental Clouds as I call them.I like Planting Seeds for Academic Arguments and Discussion.I agree with you on at least 80% of your points.I plead guilty to sometimes playing Devil's Advocate to stimulate healthy discussion.
