It's time. It's time," Trump said in a lengthy and wide-ranging address to the Values Voter Summit, an annual gathering of social conservative activists. He portrayed the Middle East as a hopeless cause, despite years of American military involvement and financial investment."It's less safe now. It's less secure, less stable and they fight," he said. "That's what they do. They fight."Trump announced that he had directed $50 million in emergency aid for Syria to support Christians and other religious minorities there. Before the speech, Trump was joined on stage by Andrew Brunson, an American pastor who was released by Turkey in October 2018 after nearly two years of confinement. The case had roiled relations with Turkey and prompted an outcry from U.S. evangelical groups.Brunson led Saturday's audience in a prayer for the president.© Copyright 2019 The Associated Press. Trump's recent decision to pull back U.S. troops leaves those fighters vulnerable."The United States does not endorse this attack and has made it clear to Turkey that this operation is a badidea," Trump said.He said no American soldiers are in the area."From the first day I entered the political arena, I made it clear that I did not want to fight these endless, senseless wars — especially those that don't benefit the United States," Trump added. "Turkey has committed to protecting civilians, protecting religious minorities, including Christians, and ensuring no humanitarian crisis takes place - and we will hold them to this commitment."He said the U.S. will monitor the situation closely.Earlier Wednesday, Trump lashed out over sharp criticism of his decision to pull back U.S. troops from northeastern Syria, insisting he is focused on the "BIG PICTURE" that doesn't include American involvement in "stupid endless wars" in the Middle East."Fighting between various groups that has been going on for hundreds of years. USA should never have been in Middle East," Trump said in a series of tweets. "The stupid endless wars, for us, are ending!"Trump's words are at odds with longstanding U.S. policy of keeping thousands of American troops in thestrategically important region, and his decision is being condemned by some of his staunchest Republican allies.Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., a close Trump ally, stepped up his criticism of the president Wednesday, telling "Fox & Friends" that if Trump "follows through with this, it would be the biggest mistake of his presidency."In tweets, Graham urged prayers for "our Kurdish allies who have been shamelessly abandoned by the Trump Administration," adding, "This move ensures the reemergence of ISIS." He also said he would lead an effort in Congress to "make Erdogan pay a heavy price," referring to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.Another Trump ally, Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, a member of the GOP leadership, said she was sickened by the prospect of a Turkish incursion. "Impossible to understand," she tweeted, why Trump "is leaving America's allies to be slaughtered and enabling the return of ISIS."Trump argued on Twitter that "GOING INTO THE MIDDLE EAST IS THE WORST DECISION EVER MADE IN THE HISTORY OF OUR COUNTRY!" He said the U.S. went to war under a "false & now disproven premise, WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION. There were NONE!"Trump said he is "slowly & carefully" bringing home "our great soldiers & military," in line with his campaign promise to do so.His call for ending U.S. military involvement in the Middle East and bringing the troops home was a feature of his presidential campaign, but it flies in the face of many decades of bipartisan American policy, even as the Trump administration and its immediate predecessor have tried to give additional attention to what they see as long-term security threats elsewhere, including from China and Russia. The U.S. has more than 10,000 troops based across the Middle East, including about 5,200 in Iraq, 1,000 in Syria and several thousand others at bases in Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. Also, the U.S. Navy's Mideast headquarters is at Bahrain in the Persian Gulf.Just a couple of months ago the Pentagon reestablished a troop presence in Saudi Arabia after a lengthy absence, and in May it added air and naval forces in the region in response to what it views as worrying threats from Iran.As a further sign that the military does not share Trump's view that the fight against the extremists is over, a press release Wednesday by the U.S.-led military coalition combating IS highlighted recent battlefield gains. It concluded by saying that "removing" IS fighters, weapons and bomb materials "remains a top priority" as the group "continues to plot attacks against innocent civilians and our partners throughout Iraq and northeast Syria."Trump has long criticized President George W. Bush's decision to invade Iraq in 2003, but the subsequent rise of extremist groups like the Islamic State has convinced many national security officials, and lawmakers such as Graham, that a precipitous U.S. troop withdrawal from the region would leave the U.S. and its allies even more vulnerable to extremism.Trump also claimed the U.S. has spent $8 trillion "fighting and policing" in the Middle East, up from the $7 trillion figure he has cited numerous times.Trump is using an inflated estimate on the cost of wars and referring in part to predicted costs going decades into the future, not money actually spent. Some of the spending also reflects his policy decisions he made since taking office nearly three years ago.Graham said Congress "will push back" against Turkey. He had said earlier this week that he was working on a bipartisan bill to sanction Turkey if they invade Syria."We're not giving Turkey a green light in Congress and we're not going to abandon the Kurds," he said.Trump announced Tuesday that he and Erdogan will meet at the White House on Nov. 13.

Lynch and Idrees Ali, Reuters 1 hour 30 minutes ago By Sarah N. Lynch and Idrees AliWASHINGTON, Oct 13 (Reuters) - The United States is poised to move about 1,000 U.S. troops from northern Syria amid an ongoing Turkish incursion into the region, Defense Secretary Mark Esper said on Sunday, calling the situation "untenable" for U.S. forces. The pull-back of troops from the region dovetails with President Donald Trump's long-standing desire for the United States to extract itself from foreign conflicts. It comes after Trump a week ago withdrew some U.S. troops deployed to support Kurdish forces in the fight against Islamic State. That decision, which came under heavy fire from fellow Republicans and allies, helped open the door for Turkey to launch an offensive against the U.S.-backed Kurdish forces, part of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), who have been America's most capable partners in quashing Islamic State."In the last 24 hours, we learned that [the Turks] likely intend to extend their attack further south than originally planned, and to the west," Esper said on CBS' "Face the Nation.""We also have learned in the last 24 hours that the ... SDF are looking to cut a deal, if you will, with the Syrians and the Russians to counterattack against the Turks in the north."Esper said he spoke with Trump Saturday night, and that the president directed the U.S. military to "begin a deliberate withdrawal of forces from northern Syria."U.S. officials had spent the last week ramping up pressure on Turkey to halt the assault on Syria and the Kurdish fighters that it considers a threat to national security.U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Friday said sanctions against Ankara were all ready should the president choose to make good on his threat to obliterate Turkey's economy.Turkey's offensive has raised alarm bells around the world amid concerns about its impact on civilians and the possibility of Islamic State militants escaping from Kurdish-led authorities.Esper said the United States knew ahead of time about Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's intentions to cross the border into Syria."It was clear to me that President Erdogan was committed to coming in. He informed us that he was coming in. He didn't ask permission."He added that the United States simply did not have enough troops to stop a Turkish advance and they needed to be taken out of harm's way."There is no way they could stop 15,000 Turks from proceeding south," he said.TROOP MOVEMENTSEsper did not put a timeline on how long the drawdown from northern Syria would take or whether the troops would be relocated within Syria or moved out of the country entirely. One official suggested that the troops would be moving away from northern Syria, but still saying in Syria.Another U.S. official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said it was difficult to imagine troops staying without having a presence in northern Syria, which is the primary route through which American supplies move. But the official added that the situation was fluid. It is also not clear what will happen with the several hundred troops that are located at the U.S. military outpost of Tanf, near the border with Iraq and Jordan. The Tanf garrison was set up when Islamic State fighters controlled eastern Syria bordering Iraq. But since the militants were driven out, Tanf has assumed a role as part of a U.S. strategy to contain Iran's military buildup."Very smart not to be involved in the intense fighting along the Turkish Border, for a change," Trump said on Twitter on Sunday."Those that mistakenly got us into the Middle East Wars are still pushing to fight. They have no idea what a bad decision they have made. Why are they not asking for a Declaration of War?," he added.Over the past few days, U.S. military officials have become increasingly concerned about the safety of American troops. On Friday, the Pentagon said U.S. troops in northern Syria came under artillery fire from Turkish positions, even though Ankara knew that American troops were located there. Two U.S. officials told Reuters on Sunday that a small number of U.S. troops have left an outpost in the town of Ain Issa in northern Syria because of concerns about a Turkish incursion that is pushing into Syria. The decision to move U.S. troops out of northern Syria will intensify concerns that the Turkish incursion could allow Islamic State to resurge. Those fears were highlighted on Sunday, when the Kurdish-led administration in northern Syria said 785 foreigners affiliated with Islamic State managed to escape a camp where they were being held following Turkish shelling.Former U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Sunday that the United States needed to keep the pressure on the militant group."If we don't keep the pressure on, then ISIS will resurge," Mattis said NBC's "Meet the Press." He was using an acronym for Islamic State. (Reporting by Idrees Ali and Sarah N. Lynch Editing by Mary Milliken and Nick Zieminski)

Disengaging from Syria might be the first thing Trump has done that I actually agree with. The Kurds can fight this one on their own or give up. People who talk about what the Turks are doing to the Kurds should realize we did much, much worse to the Iraqi's, the Afghans, and the Vietnamese. Civilian casualties in a war is basically a given because in any war, civilian casualties always outnumber combatant casualties. There is nothing much of economic value to keep us involved in the middle east. "In 2018, U.S. net imports (imports minus exports) of petroleum from foreign countries averaged about 2.34 million barrels per day, equal to about 11% of U.S. petroleum consumption. This was the lowest percentage since 1957." Even if many of the countries become islamic states, the people will eventually evolve into modern capitalists like they did in Russia and China.

OK. Now my head is spinning. A couple of days ago I posted that I agreed with Trump's move to remove our troops from Syria, and I still think it's the right thing, and the only thing Trump has done to date that I agreed with. Now I see he has deployed 1,800 more troops to Saudi to make up for the troops he will remove from Syria. My head is spinning. Is this a strategic move or just a crazy move to keep everyone in the world guessing?bobspez wrote:Disengaging from Syria might be the first thing Trump has done that I actually agree with.
