This is the second film about Marines to refer to the JFK assassination. In "Full Metal Jacket" drill instructor R. Lee Ermey praises Marine rifle training, citing Lee Oswald, who learned to be a good shot in Marine boot camp.
In "Jarhead" Jake Gyllenhaal plays a sniper waiting, waiting, waiting for a chance to use his skills. He and his cohorts are taught to seek the ideal effect, the "pink mist" of the kind seen in the Zapruder film of the Dallas assassination, a solid head shot. This is indelicate, of course, but military marksmen and snipers are expected to shoot bullets into humans, and instructors look for ways to motivate students.
